Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) at LUMS conducted an internship programme for matric and intermediate students from public schools and colleges. The internship programme called "Research Internship in Science and Engineering” (RISE) was co-sponsored by Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and LUMS through HEC's initiative named as "Social Integration Outreach Programme (SIOP)".
The 2016 RISE programme offered a 4-week internship to sixteen matric and three intermediate students of four public schools and a college. The participating students were engaged in research and training activities in various research groups of different departments across SBASSE with various faculty members.
The RISE programme also involved a representative teacher from each participating school who were given information on academic and career prospects in various disciplines of science and engineering. These teachers served as academic and career advisors at their respective institutions.
The programme concluded on August 17, 2016 with RISE-symposium where all the RISE-participants presented their RISE-activities at SBASSE LUMS in the form of posters. Parents of all the participating students were also invited to attend the event. At the end of the session, the representatives from Office of Admissions, Office of Financial Aid, and National Outreach Programme at LUMS delivered a seminar on admission and financial aid opportunities available at LUMS.
The internship concluded with the students receiving certificates of participation and a stipend of Rs. 5,000. The three best posters from the session were awarded additional prize money of Rs. 5,000 for 1st prize, Rs. 3,000 for second prize, and Rs. 2,000 for third prize. The panel of judges for the poster session comprised of Syed Zajif Hussain (Chemistry), Syed Asad Ali Naqvi (Chemistry), Mehran Rasheed (Physics), and Mudassir Ejaz (Electrical Engineering). Dr. Shahid Masud, Dean SBASSE, graced the occasion and distributed certificates and prizes.
