LUMS Graduates the Class of 2018 at its 30th Convocation Ceremony

The 30th Convocation ceremony of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) was held on Saturday, June 30, 2018, where the University graduated its largest batch to date. The ceremony presented a reunion of the entire University, with over 1000 graduating students, their parents, staff and faculty from each school gathering to commemorate the achievement of the Class of 2018.

849 Undergraduate and 252 Graduates were honoured with degrees from the Schools at LUMS and high achievers received medals and awards. The year also marked the graduation of 9 Doctorate Graduates, making it the highest number in the history of LUMS.

The ceremony was initiated in a ritualistic manner, with the entrance of the academic procession at the Convocation venue. The procession included students and faculty from all five schools; Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS), Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL) and LUMS School of Education (SOE). Over 3,000 guests and faculty members came together to celebrate the fresh graduates at this auspicious occasion.

Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi, Vice Chancellor, presiding over his last convocation at LUMS welcomed parents, students, the management committee members, trustees and the keynote speaker, Dr. Ishrat Husain at the Convocation ceremony. In his welcome address, he congratulated the graduating class and said that the youth has always been the instigator of social change. “I am proud of my association with this uniquely talented LUMS family of faculty, staff, students and alumni. It has been a wonderful experience leading this special team and witnessing the spectacular growth of LUMS in research, innovation, knowledge exchange with business and industry and service to the community.” He further added, “The exceptional environs of LUMS under the able guidance of the faculty mentors, nurtures the graduates who are the future leadership of this beautiful country, poised to take it to great heights.“

Chief guest of the Ceremony, Dr. Ishrat Husain motivated the batch to pursue their leadership goals, while embodying empathy and authenticity. He said “I have always held complete faith in our institutions, our processes and the competence of our academia to take on the challenging role of service to its student communities providing quality education and competitive environments to realise professional learning objectives on the road to a future that ensures the wellbeing of Pakistan’s economy. And I can confidently say that LUMS continuously and significantly supports this objective.”

Rector LUMS, Abdul Razzak Dawood also addressed the convocation. He thanked Prof. Dr. S. Sohail H. Naqvi for his endless efforts during his tenure in making LUMS a world-class institute and shared his best wishes for his future endeavours.

Dr. Naqvi would be stepping down from the position of Vice Chancellor effective August 1, 2018 to join the University of Central Asia (UCA) as its founding Rector.

Graduate Night, which is a celebrated LUMS tradition, preceded the convocation on Friday, June 29, 2018. A total of 158 high achievers and winners of the National Management Foundation (NMF), corporate medals and those placed on the Dean’s Honour Roll were recognised at the event. The night included a scrumptious dinner and performances by LUMS students.
